The Keep Austin Weird slogan was born from an offhand comment made during a radio broadcast and was adopted by the Austin Independent Business Alliance to promote local small business. It quickly became a part of the local flair, used on free bumper stickers and alluding to the unique cultural identity of Austin. Later, the Keep Austin Weird shirts, mugs, hats, and more were trademarked by Outhouse Designs.
Similar movements have been perpetuated in other cities, including Santa Cruz, Tampa, Raleigh, Louisville, Albuquerque, Boulder, and more.
Despite criticism that the commercial branding, as seen in Keep Austin Weird t-shirts and other souvenir items, is counterintuitive to the anti-corporation sentiment of the slogan, the campaign has been largely successful in promoting local small businesses.
